Midland Railway at Kirkby in Ashfield

About this line

The Midland Railway opened at East Kirkby on the 2nd of October 1848 – the line extending from Nottingham via the Leen Valley. The Kirkby to Mansfield section (rebuilt from the 1819 Mansfield and Pinxton horse drawn railway) opened on the 9th of October 1849. And the Kirkby to Pye Bridge line via Erewash Valley was rebuilt as a standard gauge railway, circa 1848-49.

Kirkby-in-Ashfield Loco Shed was the home to a large allocation of Stanier 8F 2-8-0’s for three decades with the last ones leaving in early 1967.
